SRT rider Rossi impresses on four wheels

KUALA LUMPUR – Petronas Yamaha Sepang Racing Team’s (SRT) Valentino Rossi showed again that he is also a great competitor on four wheels after notching another podium finish at the Gulf 12 Hours endurance race over the weekend.

Racing for Monster VR46 Kessel, Rossi and teammates Luca Marini and Alessio Salucci did well to place second in their pro-am class and fourth overall at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The trio, who qualified eighth, had taken turns behind the wheel of their Ferrari 488 GT3 car throughout the 12-hour endurance race.

Marini, who is also Rossi’s half-brother, is a fellow MotoGP rider while Salucci is the director of the VR46 riders academy.

The trio had won their class and finished third overall at the 2019 edition of the same race.

Rossi, who in 2019 tested Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One car, was delighted with their result.

“It was a beautiful day, we had fun and managed to get on the podium,” Rossi told Italian race portal GPOne.

“We are happy because the cars (competitors) were all very fast. As usual, we were more competitive in the second part of the race, during the night.”

The MotoGP great, who has seven premier class world championship titles to his name, last week donned SRT colours for the first time.

While many are expecting this to be his final season in the MotoGP world championship, Rossi made it clear that he is revving up for another great run.

“I am very happy to join Petronas SRT for this year. I have seen what the team has done over the last two years and I am excited to see what we can do together,” said Rossi, in a video released on SRT’s social media channels.

“I can’t wait to work with the team and get out on track.”

Former SRT rider Fabio Quartararo has taken over Rossi’s seat at the Monster Energy Yamaha factory team in a swap between the two squads.

SRT have hit the ground running since their MotoGP debut in 2019 and won an impressive six races last year.

Rossi will be teaming up with his former protege Franco Morbidelli for SRT this season.
