South Korea’s Pohang tame Southern Tigers, notch 4-1 victory over JDT

PETALING JAYA: South Korean club Pohang Steelers proved too strong for Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) after beating the Malaysian club 4-1 in their Group G AFC Champions League game at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Monday (June 28).

The Southern Tigers drew first blood in the 17th minute when Pohang’s defence inadvertently deflected Leandro Velasquez’s shot into goal.

However, Pohang fought back when Boris Taschni and Kang Sang-woo scored their penalties in the 27th and 35th minute, respectively.

The South Korean club punctured any hopes of a comeback when Kwon Kwi-pyo scored the third goal in the 82nd minute. Substitute Son Min-kyu completed the rout by scoring a penalty in the 90th minute.

JDT remain third in the group standings with three points, as in the first two games, they lost to Nagoya Grampus Eight (0-1) and won against Ratchaburi (1-0).

They will face Pohang again in the return fixture on July 1.
