SHAH ALAM: The scheduled water cut taking place from Oct 13 to 16 is inevitable and required to prevent abrupt water interruption from occurring in the near future, says Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
The Selangor Mentri Besar explained that the interruption, expected to last from one to three days, was necessary.
“I hope it would be understood that this is not being done on a whim and we have thought about local and surrounding factors for it to not be a burden but we cannot put this off anymore,” Amirudin told reporters at a press conference on Thursday (Oct 7).
The maintenance work on Phase 1 of the Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant was aimed at overcoming the problem afflicting the water supply in the state.
Three factors behind water disruption have been identified and they were insufficient raw water supply, disruption at water treatment plants and contamination or broken pipes caused by third parties, he added.
Amirudin said in the event the maintenance work was not carried out, the state’s water supply may be adversely impacted in the future.
“If this is not done, there is a possibility of malfunction, failure to function and treatment plants will take a longer time for water supply to be restored like what happened during the 2008 to 2013 period,” said Amirudin.
He said the cause behind water disruption at that time was mainly due to malfunctioning water treatment plants.
He added the upcoming water disruption will affect more than 900 locations throughout Selangor.
