PETALING JAYA: Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin personally met the students involved in the latest period spot check allegations at a school in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur.
He said he headed straight to the school on Wednesday (Oct 26) after arriving in KL International Airport from Kuching to get information directly from the students involved and also the school’s principal and teachers.
“I take the allegations seriously. If there is such a practice in any Education Ministry institution, we are committed to ensure that it does not continue to happen,” he said in a social media post Wednesday.
He added that the ministry will go through all the feedback obtained.
“The ministry is always committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment in schools and hostels,” he said.
Together with him at the school were Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Yusran Shah Mohd Yusof and director-general Datin Sri Nor Zamani Abdol Hamid.
Radzi was responding to a tweet by an Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia officer.
According to the tweet, about 30 female students were given cotton buds and asked to prove they were menstruating on Oct 18.
This was not the first time “period spot checks” had been reported.
In April, some students took to social media, revealing the practice was happening in schools during the month of Ramadan.
Following the revelation, Radzi said the ministry would set up a new committee to look into the “period spot check” allegations and other similar issues that may crop up in the future.
