PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) were seeking a confidence booster in their Super League match against Selangor ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Terengganu but got a reality check instead.

And coach Hector Bidoglio was quick to remind the Southern Tigers that the 1-1 draw with the Red Giants was a timely lesson on not to take any opponent for granted.

“They will now have their feet firmly on the ground. We can expect more of such challenges if we want to retain the league title and win the FA Cup,” he said.

“Selangor made it difficult for us to play the kind of football we usually play. We have to be on guard as Terengganu can do the same to us in the FA Cup final.’’

JDT drew first blood in the 33rd minute when Brazilian striker Bergson Da Silva scored his 21st goal of the season via a penalty.

The Red Giants, however, drew level when their own Brazilian hitman Herlison Caion took advantage of a quick throw-in from Ahmad Zikri Khalili to beat onrushing goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli with a cool finish in the 65th minute.

Meanwhile, Selangor’s interim coach Nidzam Jamil was happy with the attitude and commitment of his players.

“We’ve had a tough four weeks and getting a point against a top side like JDT is a morale booster.

We have to be stronger when we take on Sabah on Saturday.”

JDT remain top with 42 points from 16 games, while Selangor are eighth with 17 points from 16 matches.
