ALOR STAR: Kedah recorded 952 dengue cases from the beginning of this year until Oct 8, an increase of 133.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Two deaths were also reported this year.
Cases for this year were lower than before the Covid-19 pandemic, a decrease of 30.5 per cent compared with 806 cases in 2019.
State Health and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman said during the same period this year, there were 77 outbreaks compared with only 15 outbreaks in the same period last year.
“Of the 77 dengue outbreaks, five hotspots were successfully controlled, 69 had ended and three are still active.
“Control and prevention activities are carried out to break the chain of infection.
“These include checks on premises, fogging, destroying breeding grounds and health education.
“In addition, prevention activities are enhanced in priority and risky localities throughout Kedah,” he said in a statement today.
Dr Hayati said a significant increase in dengue cases in Kedah started since the 35th epidemiology week in the three districts of Langkawi, Kota Star and Kubang Pasu.
“Among the constituencies with the highest reported cases are Kuah, Mergong, Kuala Kedah, Naga, Derga, Alor Malai, Jitra, Kota Setar, Pengkalan Kundur, Teluk Cengai and Ulu Melaka.”
He said as of Oct 8, 266,420 premises were checked and 4,972 compounds amounting to RM2,383,050 were issued.
