SHAH ALAM: Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the rise of cybercrime is a concern for the police.
Speaking at the 26th Departmental Review of the Joint Malaysia-Thailand Working Committee Meeting on Criminal Activities, he said the meeting was a success, with fruitful and constructive discussion being held.
Nevertheless, both Malaysian and Thai representatives expressed concern over the rising cybercrime issues at a press conference after the event.
Shuhaily said both sides came to a mutual understanding of the importance of having a committee to look into cybercrime.
“Moving forward, it is almost impossible for us to stand alone; as cybercrime has no borders, jurisdiction would always be an issue for us,” he said.
Shuhaily revealed the police now have to deal with crime in two worlds: the real and the cyber world, while expressing concern over having to be extremely cautious when it comes to the police’s presence in the cyber world.
“Whenever we put our presence in the cyber world, then the issues of rights to information, freedoms of information, freedom of expression — all that has been posed as if we are encroaching on the rights of the public.”
“That is a challenge for us. We have to first educate and in later part try to convince the public that there is a limit to everything. There are a lot more vulnerabilities in cyberspace,” he said.
“We have reviewed the status of our relations and have agreed the strengthening of our cooperation and collaboration is critical in advancing our common goal, which is the security of our nation and our people,” Shuhaily said in a speech today.
“There’s no way that Malaysia can stand alone without its neighbours, likewise for Thailand,” he added.
The 3-day Malaysia-Thailand joint committee meeting was supposed to be held in 2019, but postponed to this year due to unforeseen circumstances.
Thailand will host the 27th meeting next year.
There were a total of 46 representatives joining the meeting, with 22 from Thailand and 24 from Malaysia.
