KUANTAN: A wedding planner in Raub who took payment for work that was never carried out has been jailed for two years.

Raub police chief Supt Mohd Shahril Abd Rahman said a report was received from a bride who had paid the man to coordinate her Nov 12 wedding.

However, the man did not show up on the day, causing the bride to lose RM18,999.

Supt Mohd Shahril said in a statement that police arrested the owner of a bridal boutique on Monday (Nov 20).

He said the man then admitted to accepting payment from the bride but did not carry out the work as promised.

The man also admitted being involved in 11 other cases where police reports were lodged, he added.

Supt Mohd Shahril said the man was charged with five counts of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code at the Raub Magistrate’s Court on Friday (Nov 24) and pleaded guilty to all charges.

He said the man was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane for each count, with the jail terms to run concurrently.

“We advise the public to be careful when selecting event management consultants by checking their background first.

“Do not simply hand over money to avoid becoming the victim of a scam,” Supt Mohd Shahril added.
