Matrade inks MOU with Amazon to bolster SMEs’ export capabilities

KUALA LUMPUR (June 14): Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) and Amazon have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to bolster the export capabilities of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

Under the agreement, the two parties will join forces to spearhead the “Go Global with Amazon and Matrade” initiative, which will help Malaysian brand owners and sellers seize cross-border business opportunities with Amazon Global Selling.

“Amazon Global Selling helps businesses from anywhere in the world launch a global business, build international brands, and reach Amazon’s hundreds of millions of worldwide active customer accounts,” the parties said in a joint statement.

Matrade and Amazon will partner to raise awareness and provide essential knowledge of cross-border e-commerce to Malaysian brand owners and sellers.

Amazon Global Selling will share insights and expertise, facilitate training workshops, and guide businesses through the Amazon seller journey, including account registration, product preparation, listing, shipping, advertising, and more.

Matrade and Amazon will work closely to showcase success stories of Malaysia-based sellers selling overseas on Amazon — such as in the US and European Union stores, inspiring and motivating other local small business owners to start their cross-border business with Amazon Global Selling.

“Matrade will support and promote Amazon Global Selling’s training activities to relevant local entities, including businesses, authorities, and business associations, to foster greater participation,” it said.

Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said that, together with Amazon, it aims to provide Malaysian SMEs with the essential tools, knowledge, and support to succeed in today’s competitive global marketplace.

Anand Palit, the head of Amazon Global Selling in Southeast Asia, said they are observing growing interest from Malaysian sellers who want to sell to overseas customers with Amazon. He noted that the number of new Malaysian sellers selling their products overseas through Amazon Global Selling nearly doubled in the January-April period from a year ago.

In a separate statement, Matrade said it had also joined hands with Tiktok Shop to intensify cross-border business opportunities through the #ThisisMY Campaign.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, during the launch campaign, stated that the campaign would allow Malaysian businesses, distributors, and entrepreneurs to expand into Singapore.

This collaboration between Matrade and TikTok Shop is part of Matrade’s cross-border e-commerce development programme or eBizLink, an initiative under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

“#ThisisMY will feature a series of exciting activities, including knowledge sharing sessions and training for cross border e-commerce, with at least 30 Malaysian companies assisted to generate RM15 million in sales,” Zafrul said.

Taking advantage of Asean Online Sales Day, an annual event that promotes e-commerce activities within Asean, the #ThisisMY campaign will be intensified on Aug 8.
