KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) reported a total of 12 million passengers across its airport network in August 2024.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the group said this marked the second consecutive month of record traffic, with a 9.8 per cent increase compared to August 2023, and reaching 96.1 per cent of August 2019 levels.
“International passenger movements remained robust, with 6.5 million passengers, reflecting an 18.5 per cent increase over August 2023 and surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 6.1 per cent.
“The surge in passengers was largely driven by summer travel, the introduction of new airlines, expansion to new routes, and increased weekly flight frequencies,” it said.
MAHB also reported 5.8 million domestic passengers, a 1.6 percent increase over August 2023, with a recovery rate of 87.1 per cent compared to 2019.
Locally, MAHB said airports in Malaysia handled more than eight million passengers for the second consecutive month, with an equal split between international and domestic traffic.
“The growth was driven by additional flight frequencies and the commencement of new airlines and routes, mainly to and from international destinations.
“Key international markets, particularly Indonesia, China, and India, were the top contributors to the increase in August traffic,” it added. – The Star
