Mi Mix Fold: Xiaomi’s answer to the Galaxy Z Fold 2

A day after introducing its extended members of its Mi 11 flagship series, Xiaomi has just revealed the Mi Mix Fold. This is the Chinese tech giant’s first foldable smartphone and it looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Huawei Mate X2.

Pricing and availability

The Mi Mix Fold is priced from CNY 9,999 which is significantly more affordable than its foldable rivals. The standard Mi Mix comes in two configurations while the Ceramic Special Edition is offered with a whopping 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Below is the Mi Mix Fold official pricing in China:

12GB RAM +256GB storage – CNY 9,999 (about RM6,139)
12GB RAM +512GB storage – CNY 10,999 (about RM6,945)
16GB RAM +512GB storage – CNY 12,999 (about RM8,208)

The foldable device is now open for pre-order and it will be available in China from the 16th April 2021.

Hardware Specs

Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Mi Mix Fold uses an inward folding design that comes with two displays. The outer cover gets a 6.52″ AMOLED display that pushes a 2520×840 pixels resolution in a 27:9 aspect ratio. It boasts a high 90Hz refresh rate with a 180Hz touch-sampling rate.

Meanwhile, the internal display is a flexible 8.01″ flexible OLED panel that pushes a Quad HD+ resolution in 4:3 aspect ratio. The internal screen offers a lower 60Hz refresh rate but it supports Dolby Vision with HDR10+. Both displays can push a peak brightness of 900 nits.

For a more enjoyable audio experience, the Mi Mix Fold boasts a quad-speaker setup that’s tuned by Harman Kardon. This is also the first foldable smartphone to come with a total of 4 speakers.

For a more productive experience, there’s also a “PC mode” which offers a desktop-like interface that allows you to run multiple floatable apps. You can also run apps side by side and perform drag and drop functions.

Under the hood, it runs on the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. To keep things cool during intensive usage, it also features a butterfly-type cooling system that uses a combination of VC liquid cooling, bionic-structure graphene, thermal gel and multilayer graphite sheet.

In the camera department, the Mix Fold gets a triple-camera setup that uses a 108MP HM2 main shooter with a 1/1.52″ sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera and an 8MP telephoto camera with the world’s first “liquid lens” on a phone. According to Xiaomi, the radius of curvature of the spherical surface can be accurately changed with a high-precision motor that offers 3x optical zoom, up to 30x telephoto with a minimum distance of 3cm.

The liquid lens is said to cover functions of a macro and a telephoto camera. Another benefit is that the lens offer high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion and excellent resistance to extreme temperatures. For selfies, the device comes with a 20MP front camera.

Powering the device is a large 5,020mAh battery, which is 500mAh more than what you’ll find on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Mate X2. It uses a dual-battery architecture with two batteries (2,460mAh + 2,560mAh). On top of that, it also supports 67W wired fast charging via USB-C. A full charge would only take 37 minutes but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to support wireless charging.

In terms of weight, the Mi Mix Fold is the heaviest of the lot at 317g for the standard version and 332g for the ceramic edition. As a comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Mate X2 weighs 282g and 295g respectively.
