Selection Council mooted to ensure integrity of graft-buster

KUALA LUMPUR: The All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on Integrity, Governance and Anti-Corruption has called for the establishment of the Selection Council to ensure the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) could carry out its duties without fear and favour.

Its chairman, Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi, proposed the council to review the appointment of members in the MACC’s Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB).

The Tumpat member of parliament said the council was aimed at ensuring the appointment of members in the advisory board would be carried out in a transparent manner.

“Apart from the Prime Minister, Law Minister, and Chief Justice, we also proposed for the Opposition Leader, Parliament Select Committee chairman, Bar Council president and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) president to sit on the council.

“The council will also be responsible for the proposal on the selection over the appointment of the MACC chief commissioner.

“This proposal is to allow the MACC to carry out its actual duties without fear or favour,” he told reporters at the Parliamentary complex here today.

Present were the committee’s deputy chairman Hannah Yeoh (Segambut), Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah Hamzah (Kubang Pasu), and Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni of Gabungan Parti Sarawak.

The committee also proposed for amendments to Section 13, 14 and 15 of the MACC Act 2009.

The amendments, said Che Abdullah, was to provide autonomy to the ACAB to monitor the operation of MACC and to implement any necessary item to strengthen the anti-graft busters.
