Caely ex-chairman: “Allegations against me untrue, baseless, highly defamatory”

FORMER Caely Holdings Bhd chairman Datuk Wira Louis Ng Chun Hau has called the company’s allegations against him “untrue, baseless, unfounded, false, and highly defamatory” and said he will be taking legal action against the perpetrators for “tarnishing [his] reputation”.

Ng was responding to news reports that the Perak-based lingerie and apparel manufacturer had lodged a police report against the 12 board members led by Ng over alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to RM30.55 mil involving its wholly-owned subsidiary Caely (M) Sdn Bhd during their tenure.

“It has come to my attention that Caely had issued a media statement and spoken to The Edge on Oct 6 regarding their latest police report alleging misuse of funds against the previous board members including myself,” Ng said in a statement today (Oct 7).

“At the outset, Caely’s allegation against me is untrue, baseless, unfounded, false, and highly defamatory against me. I hereby strongly deny and refute all the allegations made therein.

“Such a statement has tarnished my reputation and I shall be taking legal action against the perpetrators.”

In a bourse filing on Wednesday (Oct 5) Caely did not name the former board members except to say that they “include those who were on board up till Aug 29 prior to the appointment of the current board”.

However, when contacted by The Edge a company spokesperson had identified Caely founder and former executive director Datin Fong Nyok Yoon and her husband Datuk Chuah Chin Lai (who was the group’s managing director from October 2002 to April 2021) as well as Ng as among the 12 individuals under police investigation.

On this matter Ng pointed out that upon discovery of the alleged misuse of company funds by certain former Caely directors – which had allegedly happened prior to his appointment as company chairman on Dec 8, 2020 – he had “taken swift action to initiate investigation into the allegations” by appointing the external forensic auditor Virdos Lima Consultancy (M) Sdn Bhd to carry out the forensic audit exercise.

“Through the forensic audit investigation, I had given my full support and cooperation to the forensic auditor,” Ng elaborated.

“After I sold my shares and resigned as executive chairman on May 13, 2022 the investigation was not abandoned as there was proper handover to enable my successor to continue the investigation.”

Ng noted that further actions were also taken against the former directors who were responsible for the alleged wrongdoings by the subsequent board of directors after his resignation from the board.

“It is therefore absurd to even suggest I would cover up the alleged misuse of RM30.55 mil of funds by the former directors in question or being involved in any manner or whatsoever in the alleged wrongdoings,” he remarked.
