MET Malaysia: Country will not be experiencing London weather

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) has dispelled claims that cold weather, like in London, will hit Malaysia next month.

Such claims, which have been circulated on social media, were false and had been spread in 2016 and were re-posted, said MET Malaysia.

The department explained that the cold weather condition experienced in most areas in the peninsula, especially the east coast and west coast, was due to the humid and cloudy weather for several days and the cold winds.

Apart from that, the cloudy condition and no sunlight continuously for several days also contributed to the cooler than normal weather in the country, it said in a statement.

On Jan 3, the lowest minimum daily temperature of 21°C and 22°C were recorded in Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.

This was normal on a cloudy and rainy day, it said.

(A check on weather websites showed that London has an average temperature of between 2°C and 8°C in February.)

The department advised the public to get weather forecasts and warnings through its official website and social media site or through the hotline 1-300-22-1638 and the myCuaca application.

Meanwhile, the weather condition in the east coast states has improved.

The states are Kelantan, Terengganu (involving Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu and Marang) and Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis and Jerantut), said MET Malaysia in a statement at 7.25am yesterday. — Bernama
