The number of Covid-19 cases went down to 941 yesterday, the lowest so far for the year, of which 933 were from local transmissions, while the remaining eight were import cases.
The last time the daily cases were recorded below the 1,000 mark was on Dec 9, 2020. Health DG Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the latest figure brings the country’s cumulative Covid-19 cases to 342,885.
He said in a statement yesterday that Selangor reported the highest number of new cases with 219 cases, followed by Sarawak with 192 cases, Johor with 171 cases and Penang with 164 cases.
Perak, Melaka, Pahang, Terengganu, Labuan and Putrajaya all reported below 10 cases, while Perlis is the only state with zero case.
The total number of recoveries was 327,406 with 1,097 patients discharged yesterday. Of the 14,219 active cases that were being treated in health facilities nationwide, 166 patients were placed in the intensive care unit with 73 patients requiring respiratory aid.
The country also reported five casualties yesterday, involving four citizens and one non-citizen and bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,260 cases.
“The death cases today involved two cases in Sarawak and Sabah respectively, and one case in Selangor,” Dr Noor Hisham said.
He added that the ministry identified three new clusters yesterday involving two workplace clusters and one community cluster.
Meanwhile, 11 clusters ended, making the country’s total number of active clusters to 373.
On the security front, a total of 44 individuals were arrested and compounded on Sunday for breaching the standard operating procedures of the Movement Control Order.
“Among the offenses were no physical distancing (39), failing to provide registration equipment to record customer details (three), interstate crossing without permission (one) and not wearing face mask (one),” said Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a statement yesterday.
Authorities arrested seven illegal immigrants, seized one vehicle and one boat during Ops Benteng. During the operation, 98 boats were detected in national waters. Five illegal immigrants were also deported through two deportation activities.
Around 858 individuals arrived at all international entrances on Sunday and all were sent to quarantine stations across the country.
Ismail Sabri also said a total of 1,357 foreigners underwent the Covid-19 screening test and out of that number, two people tested positive.
The Human Resources Ministry informed that approximately 659,757 foreign workers had undergone screening tests involving 34,227 employers and 10,064 people confirmed positive.
