BUTTERWORTH: About 47 compounds totalling RM203,500 were issued by the Road Transport Department (RTD) in a series of state-wide operations.

The joint operations, together with the state Health Department from July 25 until yesterday, were conducted against operators of factory buses as well as factory workers who failed to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOP).

Penang is currently under Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

RTD deputy director-general (Planning and Operations) Aedy Fadly Ramli said there were still some operators of factory buses as well as factory workers who failed to observe the SOPs to fight Covid-19 although enforcement had been carried out for nearly two years now.

“In the operations since July 25, we found that most compounds issued were against public transportation operators, particularly vans ferrying factory workers, beyond the capacity limit set. There were 18 compounds totalling RM51,500 issued.

“The second highest offence was for failure to provide equipment for temperature checks, where nine compounds were issued totalling RM58,000.

“We also found license holders and operators of public transportation had failed to prepare the MySejahtera QR Code for scanning purposes inside the vehicles used to ferry workers,” he told newsmen at the Sungai Dua toll plaza here last night.

Aedy Fadly was met after the enforcement operations conducted under Act 342 as well as the Road Transport Act 1987, together with the state Health Department and police.

In the operations, Aedy Fadly said 203 vehicles were checked and 98 compounds were issued for various offences.

Among them were related to road tax, driving without license, tinting and vehicle registration plates not according to specifications.

“The RTD will continue with such enforcement operations from time to time to ensure all public and commercial vehicles, especially buses and lorries, observe safety aspects at all times,” he added.

Meanwhile, he said the department would provide advice and advocacy for those who committed minor offences throughout the Merdeka month to create awareness for them to observe traffic laws.

“This will be the approach taken by the department nationwide until Sept 16.
