Covid-19 deaths jump to 278 on Sunday

KUALA LUMPUR: New Covid-19 fatalities climbed to 278 on Sunday (Sept 26) from 228 deaths the previous day.

According to the Health Ministry’s CovidNow portal, brought-in-dead (BID) cases also jumped drastically from only 36 cases on Saturday to 99 cases yesterday.

To date, the virus has claimed 25,437 lives in the country, including 5,022 BID cases who succumbed to the virus before receiving treatment at healthcare facilities.

The seven-day average of actual deaths, as of Sunday, stood at 90

Selangor accounted for the most number of fatalities (113 deaths), followed by Johor (32 deaths), Penang (31 deaths), Kedah (27 deaths), Sabah (22 deaths), Kuala Lumpur (12 deaths), Kelantan (11 deaths), Sarawak (11 deaths), Perak (five deaths), Terengganu (five deaths), Melaka (four deaths), Pahang (four deaths) and Negri Sembilan (one death).

No deaths were reported in Perlis, Putrajaya and Labuan yesterday.

Based on data for the past two weeks, 5.6 deaths have occurred for every 100,000 people in the country.

Yesterday, the Health Ministry identified 13,096 new Covid-19 cases in the country with the bulk of infections detected in Sarawak (2,943 cases).

Johor reported the highest hospitalisation rate in the country, with 1,662 patients currently receiving treatment in hospitals across the southern state.

The state reported the highest hospital bed utilisation rate at 84.6 per cent while only 40.9 per cent of hospital beds in Kuala Lumpur were occupied.

Meanwhile, the number of patients currently being treated at Intensive Unit Care (ICU) wards nationwide has steadily declined since Sept 23 to 1,050 patients on Sunday.

Critical patients requiring ventilator support have also decreased to 582.

As of Sunday, Selangor still had the highest number of patients in ICU wards (189 patients), including 96 of them who required ventilator support.

On vaccination progress, 93.7 per cent of adults in the country have received at least one Covid-19 dose to date, including 83.7 per cent of adults who have been fully vaccinated.

The most used vaccine brand since the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme (NIP) started on Feb 24 was the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (47.9 per cent), followed by Sinovac (43.9 per cent), AstraZeneca (eight per cent) and Cansino (0.2 per cent).

Malaysia is projected to fully vaccinate its entire adult population by Oct 31.
