Several areas of JB flooded after heavy rain early Thursday (Sept 30)

JOHOR BARU: A downpour early Thursday (Sept 30) morning resulted in flash floods in several areas here.

According to the Johor Fire and Rescue Department, flash floods were reported in Kempas Denai, Kempas Permatang, Kampung Melayu Pandan, Kempas Lurah, Taman Skudai Baru, Taman Johor and Kampung Ubi here.

A department spokesperson said there were no relocations so far.

Taman Suria resident John Ivan said floodwater began entering his house about 30 minutes after a heavy downpour at around 6am.

The 65-year-old said this was the second time he was experiencing a flash flood after a similar incident happened last week.

“After that incident, I built a 20cm barricade at the back of my house because I was worried that it would happen again.

“I had just completed it on Wednesday (Sept 29) but the barricade was still not enough to prevent the floodwater from entering my kitchen, back room and bathroom.

“Only my wife and I live here so we have been cleaning up the house by ourselves,” he said when interviewed, claiming that the flash floods started after a drainage project began near his house along Jalan Murni 2.

Ivan said murky water from a sewer along his street also gushed out into residents’ compounds after the flash floods.

Videos and photos of the incident have been shared on social media, including traffic congestion after floodwaters made a stretch of the main road near Kampung Melayu Pandan inaccessible.
