MoH determined to pursue generational ban on tobacco

KUALA LUMPUR: Enforcement is an important aspect in Malaysia’s pursuit of a generational ban on tobacco and smoking products.

However Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said this would not deter the authorities in pursuing the ban.

“Enforcement is important especially in terms of curbing the sale of illegal cigarettes but this will not stop us from pursuing the ban.

“There are many methods we can use to control the sale of cigarettes to those born beyond 2005,” he said after launching the national immunisation programme for children or PICKids at the Tunku Azizah Hospital.

Khairy was responding to questions on how the ambitious ban was to be carried out for those who turn 18 in 2024 and beyond.

He was asked whether MySejahtera or similar mechanics would be used to control the sale of cigarettes and other smoking products.

Khairy earlier said the ministry was convinced that it was moving in the right direction based on public feedback.

He announced this decision in Geneva during a World Health Conference last week.
