MACC detains scam suspect for offering RM60,000 bribe to cop

MELAKA: A suspected scammer has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for offering RM60,000 to a police officer as an inducement not to take action against him.

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested at 10.40pm on Thursday (June 1) at Melaka MACC headquarters here.

He was produced at the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh on Friday (June 2) and remanded until June 7.

The order was issued by Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman.

MACC is investigating the case under Section 17(b) of the MACC Act 2009 which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of RM10,000 or five times the value of the bribe, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

The suspect is believed to have offered the sum to the officer, with the rank of deputy superintendent, to stop the latter from initiating an investigation on alleged cheating cases involving him.

State MACC director Mohd Shahril Che Saad confirmed the arrest and remand.
